Giving your bath a new look

October 19th, 2011 by admin 1

Baths are often overlooked when redecorating. Can your bathroom be redone inexpensively? The same decorating tipsbeautiful bathroom that work for other rooms can easily transform any bath.

Changing the wall surfaces is one of the easiest ways to revamp a bath. From easy-care wall coverings to paint or faux finishes can go a long way in changing the look of the room.

Not all bath floors are hard to replace or liven up. Peel-and-stick vinyl tile and new laminates come in a variety of patterns. The new surface can often be laid atop the old one. Even “non-bathroom” prints can make an effective statement.

The next step is to choose shelving for storage and display space. Containers can hide supplies that are not attractive enough to display. Bath and beauty products are often pretty enough to display, and a collection of eye-catching items adds individuality.

Soft goods are also important. Most decorators consider using a coordinated ensemble a mistake. Try using items that do not match but work together. If you can’t find the perfect shower curtain or window panels, you can make something one-of-a-kind by using your imagination. If sewing is beyond your skills, try no-sew iron-on tape. Avoid toilet tank and lid covers with a matching contour rug. These are of no use, and provide excellent places for germs and odors to thrive.

For a large bathroom, consider adding a comfy chair or dressing table and bench. A cabinet of some kind is also useful. Even in a large space, too many pieces added can make the room seem smaller. Control clutter in order to make your bathroom a serene retreat.

A careful choice of decorative items can add the final touch. Framed artwork or photos, pottery, or apothecary jars can express your personal style, but don’t go overboard. Keep such additions to a minimum. Consider a live plant when choosing your decor. Plants have a calming effect, are environmentally friendly, and add natural beauty.

Ideas for making over your bath or powder room can be found in decorating magazines and books or on remodeling shows. Tour historic homes or open houses to note what in those bathrooms might work for you. The bath is often the only room outside the living and dining areas that your guests will see. By creating your dream bath, you can make a big impression on visitors, so, regardless of your budget, put some of these ideas your own imagination to work.

Choosing blinds for your child’s room

child room decoration

Children’s rooms come with a whole new set of challenges for the interior designer. Not only do you need to provide an increased level of safety but you also need to provide an environment children will find stimulating and interesting. I was recently & looking for beautiful blinds & shutters in London. Not entirely sure why my brother needed me to help but there you go, it gave me some inspiration for this post!

Safety: Of course for any child’s room safety is paramount, for my nephew we obviously didn’t want risk him strangling himself on the pull cord for the blind. There were two obvious solutions to this problem, the first was to look for blinds that had an alternative control system, the other was to look for ones with short cords, no more than three inches. In the end we went with a set of roller blinds as there were lots of models with short cords and were relatively affordable. However manufacturers are starting to create safer versions of other blinds. Of course for a greater price you can include options such remote controls, but these seem to add novelty rather than safety.

Lighting: The other reason that we decided to go with roller blinds is that there are a lot of black-out options available. The reason we wanted black-out blinds is because my brother lives on a busy street with lots of street lights and cars passing by. If you live in a less busy or more rural area then you may want blinds which let some light in. Particularly in the morning to help your child wake up! It has also been shown that natural light improves people’s mood and health so if you can let it in without disturbing your child’s sleep do! Translucent blinds which let in a diffuse warming light may be a good option and some suppliers sell double roller blinds which give you a translucent blind for days when the sun is too hot and a black-out blind for the night time.

Patterns and Designs: When you are decorating a child’s room you want it to be fun. So you can feel free to play around with choices of patterns and designs for their blinds. Again roller blinds come into their own here as there are a huge range of colours and designs available. With my nephew we tried to find an option that was appealing to him now at two but wouldn’t be embarrassing when he was eight or nine. My sister in law was also concerned that the set we choose would be able to cope with them redecorating the room several times. In the end we choose dark blue blinds decorated with stars. But the choice obviously depends on the child, the room and the parents. In other words it’s up to you! If you are in London, You can also increase the decor of your child’s room by installing colorful shutters. Read more here.

Lining ready made curtains

September 9th, 2011 by admin 0

Ready made drapes are a quick and lovely way to create a look in any room. Besides their aesthetic value, they also provide privacy and help maintain comfortable temperatures in the winter. Lining ready made curtains will add to their ability to cushion in the heat and save energy. Rather than changing out your favorite drapes for a thicker set during the cold months, add a thick lining yourself and keep the look you love throughout the year.

Ready Made Curtains

For this project, you will need the following things:

-Tape measure
-Your favourite drape
-Lining fabric
-Matching thread
-Sewing machine
-Fabric pen
-Fabric scissors
-Pins
-Straight edge

The first step will be to measure the length and width of the curtains and add one inch to each measurement. This will define what size lining you will need. The lining material must lay flat on either a smooth floor or any surface large and flat enough to ensure that the material will lay properly. Then the measuring tape and straight edge must be used to mark the outside borders of the liner. It is important to create thick, dark marks for mistake-free cutting and to use a very sharp pair of scissors.

Once the material has been trimmed down to the exact needed size, it must be placed face down on the working surface. The top half inch of material must be folded down and secured with pins, which should be inserted about every 3 inches or so. The same must be done for the bottom, left and right side.

Now with everything pinned, it is time to sew the edges down and remove the pins when done. When this is all done, it is finally time to attach the liner to the drape. Laying it face down with the lining over it, their edges must be pinned together at 2 inch intervals. Another set of pins at half inch intervals must be inserted afterwards, to ensure stability during the sewing process.

Using a thread that is similar to the front curtain, the two fabrics are now ready to be sewn together. It is highly recommended to double stitch for durability. After the pins are removed, the lined drape is ready to be put up and enjoyed. It is important to remember that all projects have their ups and downs and may be frustrating during the first attempt. It is however a great opportunity to be creative, play with colours and liven up decor in the home.

Guests will be impressed with the ingenuity and fortitude that these projects often underline, creating a set of drapes that not only decorate and insulate, but also start conversations. With nothing more than simple materials, a bit of fabric and a sewing machine, a project this rewarding can be completed in under an hour. The most important tip is not to skimp on a good pair of fabric scissors; the degree of sharpness can make the difference between ruining a perfectly good material and creating a fabric masterpiece.

If you have no idea to decorate the wall of one of your pieces, you can not go wrong by hanging of black and white photos. And better than using “ultra-shots photos by Robert Doisneau, Audrey Hepburn, or runners Zen at IKEA, I recommend a framework your own black and white photographs, those of a loved one or old vintage photos of your family. Nothing better and less expensive to customize its decor!

Admittedly, it’s an art to knowing how to frame your photos. The secret is not thinking too much. First, choose color frames but identical shapes and thicknesses to create sets of reasons. Always hang them at eye level. There is a fairly easy technique to get it right. It reproduces the shape of each frame on kraft paper that can be taped to the wall as he pleases. This allows you to reposition the pictures until you are satisfied overall. Before tearing the kraft paper, remember to place your nails. It’ll just hang the real photos.
